Smokeless Tobacco Facts: The Dangers

Since 2000, the sales of smokeless tobacco products have earned wealthy tobacco companies well over 2 billion dollars per year, and number of pounds sold per year spiked to over 120 million pounds in 2010. Educating the public on smokeless tobacco facts is necessary to cut the sales of these deadly products.

Smokeless tobacco contains 28 known carcinogens, including

  • Formaldehyde – a carcinogen traditionally used to embalm and preserve dead animals
  • Arsenic – a poisonous element often found in insecticides and pesticides
  • Cadmium – a metallic element similar to mercury, used in the construction of batteries
  • Polonium-210 – a radioactive isotope, thought to cause cancer
  • Lead – a toxic chemical known to cause nervous system and brain disorders
  • Cyanide – a highly poisonous chemical used in concentration camps during the holocaust to kill millions of humans
  • Nitrosamines – cancer-causing compounds

Smokeless Tobacco Facts: The Addiction

Smokeless tobacco is actually more addictive than cigarette smoking. The dose of nicotine in a single cigarette is between 1-2mg. The dose of nicotine in a single serving of snuff is 3.6mg. And the dose of nicotine in a plug of dip is 4.5mg! The concentration of nicotine is much higher in dip, which makes quitting dip even more difficult.

Additionally, the release mechanism involved in dip makes the nicotine stay in your bloodstream longer than cigarettes do. Theoretically, this should make the user have less need for nicotine. However, that’s not the case in actuality. Smokeless tobacco facts show that the average dip user gets as much nicotine as someone who smokes almost two packs of cigarettes a day!

Now, add in the fact that 90% of dippers also smoke, and the levels of nicotine and carcinogens raises through the roof. It’s easy to see why quitting dip is a difficult process.

In fact, most nicotine replacement therapies (such as gum and patches) aren’t as helpful for dip users as they are for smokers. Part of this is because NRTs don’t fulfill the psychological urge to dip and spit.
